CEYP set up our first foodbank in Eltham in April 2016, to make good use of the surplus fresh fruit and vegetables that were being discarded at the end of each day, by local food businesses and supermarkets.
Traditionally this food, which is perfectly good to eat, would be sent to become animal feed or compost because existing foodbanks couldn't easily redistribute it due to its' short shelf life.
In 2020 we opened a second foodbank in Mottingham, primarily to respond to the increased need for food caused by the Covid 19 pandemic. However due to its success, this then developed into our second permanent foodbank, serving that local community.
Thanks to the generous support of our funders and donations from members of the public, we are now able to distribute healthy tinned and packet foods, in addition to the fresh fruit and vegetables already available, at both our Eltham & Mottingham locations.
In 2021 we also began piloting a Community Food Pantry alongside our Mottingham Foodbank. This enables those on a low income (or those wanting to help us reduce food waste) to purchase up to £20 of food per week, in return for a membership fee of £3.50. This non-profit charge is fully reinvested in new stock. What our Community Pantry offers is the ability for people to choose the items they require, from a broader range of food and household items.
We are always looking for new sources of surplus food for us to redistribute to those who need it.
We also welcome additional volunteers who can give up a few hours of their time each week to help collect and sort the food we are given. We also need volunteers who can fundraise for us, in order to raise the money we need to cover the essential ongoing running costs of our services.
